HELPING YOU REACH YOUR AMERICAN DREAM
As an immigrant to the U.S. who lives and works here, you may dream of one day becoming a U.S. citizen. Citizenship provides many benefits, from allowing you to vote, travel with a U.S. passport, apply for federal jobs and government benefits, and more. It also gives you the right to remain in this country without the threat of being deported, except for rare situations of denaturalization. There are many ways to obtain citizenship. Determining the best route for you depends on your situation.
WHAT ARE THE CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS?
- You are at least 18 years old or older.
- You can read, write, and speak English. However, there are some exceptions to this rule.
- You have been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for at least five years.
- You have resided continuously in the U.S. for at least five years (3 years if you are married to a U.S. citizen) and are physically present in the U.S. half the time.
- You understand the fundamentals of U.S. history and government.
- You have been a person of “good moral character”.
TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE NATURALIZATION PROCESS, YOU MUST FALL INTO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING STATUSES:
- You have maintained lawful permanent resident status (green card holder) for a period of at least five years.
- If married to a U.S. citizen, you have maintained lawful permanent resident status (green card holder) for at least three years.
- One or both of your parents were U.S. citizens when you were born abroad.
- Your spouse or your parent is a member of the U.S. military.
- You are a member of the U.S. military or you are a veteran with an honorable discharge (some restrictions may apply)
The Naturalization Process can be incredibly complicated without the assistance of a knowledgeable immigration attorney. Mistakes or missed deadlines during the Naturalization Process can set you back and threaten your chances of attaining United States citizenship. An immigration attorney will effectively guide you through the long list of requirements, tests, applications, and other procedures to minimize the difficulties associated with the naturalization process, and to ensure that you reach your American Dream.
